Mort, a former adult services librarian and the Christian fiction columnist for Booklist, offers a thorough explanation of the genre and an exploration of reader's advisory sources specific to the literature, followed by almost 2000 annotations and bibliographies of books published mostly from the mid-1990s through the beginning of 2002. Especially useful are his summaries of early Christian classics and an overview of biblical fiction. In addition to using standard categories such as historical romance and mystery, Mort takes a unique approach by listing Catholic, Mormon, Amish, Mennonite, and Quaker fiction, subgenres that often have been overshadowed by the evangelical publishers and authors who dominate Christian fiction. Titles specifically aimed at young adults are separately profiled; adult titles with strong YA appeal are noted throughout. Entries can be accessed through the index by author, title, and limited subject headings. However, the lack of a more thorough subject index and a quick key to the many icons employed can require the user to be tenacious. The most comprehensive and up-to-date tool focusing on Christian fiction available, this is an outstanding supplement to Barbara J. Walker's Developing Christian Fiction Collections for Children and Adults. Collection development librarians and reader's advisors familiar with the publisher's "Genreflecting Advisory" series can trust this latest entry. Recommended for all libraries with Christian fiction collections.

Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. Christian fiction has crossed over into the mainstream, and the latest installments of Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins' Left Behind series and Jan Karon's Mitford series regularly find places on the New York Times bestseller lists. But despite increased demand, Christian fiction is still new territory for many librarians. This new title in the Genreflecting Advisory Series tackles the growing popularity and complexity of fiction that "has something to do with Christian principles."

Booklist (on which much of the book is based), discusses almost 2,000 classic and contemporary titles, from Pilgrim's Progress to The Red Tent, with emphasis on fiction of the past 10 or so years. In an introductory chapter he explains that even though evangelical fiction dominates the genre (and the book), Christian fiction is in fact quite diverse. Along with works by Janette Oke ("the gold standard") and other evangelical writers, Mort includes works by Madeleine L'Engle, Andrew Greeley, John Updike, and many more not necessarily thought of first as "Christian." And even within the evangelical mode, there are books to serve almost every reading taste.

Christian Fiction is an icon designating works that adhere to the publishing code of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the Christian Booksellers Association--no profanity, no explicit sex. Mort also identifies works that are good book club and discussion group choices. The index references authors and titles.

Christian Fiction covers the genre much more extensively than What Inspirational Literature Do I Read Next? (Gale, 2000) and is recommended as a readers' advisory and collection development tool. RBB
